What Support Serve is

Support Serve is a free service that helps volunteers and nonprofits find each other. We are not a party to any volunteer arrangement, we do not employ or supervise volunteers, and we do not direct nonprofit work.

Free service

We do not charge volunteers or nonprofits membership, listing or other fees.

Who may use it

  • You must be at least 13 to use Support Serve. Volunteers aged 13 to 17 can only apply to nonprofits that welcome volunteers under 18, and a parent or guardian must agree each time they apply. Nonprofits that accept under-18 volunteers are responsible for safeguarding them, including supervision and any further consent the law requires where they operate.
  • Provide accurate information, keep your sign-in secure, and treat others respectfully.
  • Do not post unlawful, misleading or discriminatory content, or misuse other users' contact details.

We do not vet volunteers; nonprofits own screening

Volunteers describe their own skills and experience, and we do not verify them. We do not run background checks or confirm identities of volunteers. Nonprofits are responsible for deciding whom to accept, for any background checks, references, training and supervision, and for following the law where they operate. A "background check required" flag on a project is information provided by the nonprofit, not a check performed by us.

We review nonprofits before they can post projects, using the information they give us. That review is not an endorsement or guarantee of any organization.

Insurance and liability

  • Nonprofits are responsible for insurance appropriate to their volunteer activities. We do not provide insurance or workers' compensation coverage for volunteers or nonprofits.
  • Volunteers take part at their own discretion and risk, and should ask a nonprofit about insurance and safety before starting.
  • To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for what happens between volunteers and nonprofits, including injury, loss, or the conduct of any user. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Content and conduct

You are responsible for what you post. You give us permission to display it on the service so it can work. We may remove content or projects that break these terms.

Reviews must describe your own experience volunteering with that nonprofit, honestly and without personal attacks. Nonprofits may reply once, publicly. We may hide reviews or replies that break these terms.

If something on Support Serve looks unsafe, misleading or abusive, please report it. We review every report, and we never tell anyone who reported them. Reports about the safety of young volunteers are reviewed first. Do not use reports to harass others.

Company volunteer programs

Companies can run an employee volunteer program on Support Serve after we review them. Volunteering through a company program is voluntary. Companies must not pressure employees to join, to share their name, or to volunteer, and must not treat anyone differently for choosing not to. A company program does not make Support Serve a party to anyone's employment, and company programs on Support Serve never involve money: no donations, matching gifts or payments.

A company may only register with an email domain it owns, and must only use what it sees for its own volunteer program and reports.

Suspension and termination

We may suspend or remove any account, organization or project, at our discretion, for example if it breaks these terms, appears unsafe, or is misleading. We will try to say why unless doing so would create risk. If you think we got it wrong, write to hello@supportserve.org. You can stop using Support Serve and delete your account at any time.

No warranties

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error free, or that any project or volunteer will be suitable.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you live somewhere whose law gives you rights that cannot be waived, those rights still apply.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. When we make an important change, we will post it here, update the date at the top, and tell signed-in users. Continuing to use Support Serve after a change means you accept it.
