How we review nonprofits
A person on our team reviews every nonprofit before it can post a project. Here is what that review covers, and what it does not.
What we check
- The organization is real: a working website or public page, a registration number such as a US EIN, or both.
- For a US EIN, we look it up in public IRS records.
- The mission, location and contact email fit together.
- Projects are volunteer roles. Listings that are paid work or ask for money are removed when we find them.
What we do not check
- We do not vet, interview or background-check volunteers. Each nonprofit decides who to accept.
- We do not visit nonprofits or audit their finances.
- A review is a check of what the nonprofit told us, not an endorsement.
Meet new people in public or online first, never send money, and use the "Report" button (it needs a free account) on any project that looks wrong. More answers in our FAQ

Free, and staying free
There are no membership fees for volunteers or nonprofits. Any nonprofit can join once we've confirmed who they are, and anyone can sign up to volunteer. Gifts from supporters keep the lights on.
